ISP Architecture

Design and implementation of the core network for a Dutch ISP

H2B provided support to a medium-sized internet service provider (ISP) that offers internet, television and telephony. The ISP in question has in recent years made the transition from a COAX to a FIBER (FTTH) infrastructure in order to fulfill the growing need for fast and reliable internet.

The network of the ISP in question has grown strongly in the past year due to the growth of new customers and the expansion of the work area. In order to ensure that the network can also provide fast, stable and high-quality services in the future, the ISP in question has asked H2B to develop a long-term vision for the network and to support it in its implementation.

H2B has started an audit on the current network to identify initial points for improvement and to gain more insight into the way in which the ISP and its customers use the connections. Based on this research, H2B greatly improved the core infrastructure in two phases;

  1. In the initial phase, H2B focused on improving the capacity and stability of the existing network. This was achieved, among other things, by expanding and refining the existing first-hop security measures, implementing extensive monitoring on all network equipment and applying segmentation between the different locations and traffic flows.
  2. In the following phase, H2B made a design for the replacement of part of the core infrastructure, naturally with the reuse of equipment where possible. Together with its partner Huawei, H2B has selected, delivered and implemented the new equipment.

During the entire process, H2B worked closely with the in-house technicians of the client to ensure a good transfer of knowledge. In addition, extensive documentation has been drawn up which has been made available to the client so that it is optimally able to manage its own infrastructure. Of course, H2B always provides 3rd line support on the solution it has delivered.
